Muñecas Sin Rostro Logo
The Park
Muñeca Sin Rostro (Faceless Dolls) is a sculptural placemaking project launched by the Punto Urban Art Museum (PUAM) in Salem, MA. Located in El Punto neighborhood of Salem, PUAM commissioned artist Luis Rivas to create seven 12' tall doll sculptures as a permanent extension of his traveling Urbe Iconica project. Inspired by small hand-made ceramic dolls originating from the Dominican Republic, the sculptures represent iconic childhood and cultural artifacts of wider LatinX cultures. Local artists were then commissioned to paint individual sculptures in inspired by local community stories developed through community-focused doll-making events.
The Project
PUAM hired Creative Blocks to design a logo for the installation to be used in placemaking and information signs, and web and digital media. Understanding the deep cultural connection El Punto would come to have with this installation, Creative Blocks organized and facilitated two discovery workshops with community members to explore appropriate and creative ways of branding the exhibit.
Responsibilities
- Organized and facilitated two community discovery workshops
- Hand-sketched and digitally designed options for review
- Worked iteratively with client to decide on final mark
- Finalized and packaged files for production
the logo
A direct and Spanish-first identity was chosen to connect to the inspiration behind the sculptures. The logo is set in Helvetica Condensed Black—the typeface used in the PUAM brand—and is framed by the outline of the El Punto Neighborhood, creating a recognizable and memorable graphic mark. As each doll statue tells a different story, a simple silhouette hides in the counter of the A. The letters dance up and down to fill the unique shape, emulating El Punto's ebullient and lively public spaces, building footprints, and meandering New England streets. The established pink brand of PUAM was also extended into the core brand mark for Muñecas Sin Rostro.
the results
The logo was easily implemented across media upon launch of the sculpture park. The logos also received a 2025 Logo Design award from GDUSA.
